I have to say I liked just about all of these films. It took me a while to realize Christian films are not intended for non-believers (I mean really, unless you have a friend who is close to accepting Christ they really won’t get the ideas behind what is happening). No, films like this can help in discipleship, reminding us of the power of the Gospel but also the way God desires us to have life and life to the full. Grace Unplugged is powerful and has a host of professional actors and feels like a Hollywood film (done in Alabama). This is Our Time is very powerful, but be ready for a huge plot twist that I commend the filmmakers for being willing to do. Mercy Rules is just fun, very little “Gospel” content but a whole lot about to live out your work in a way consistent with God’s desire for justice and righteousness. And as a dad, it really hit me in the area of my own son. One movie not on the list I say is the best on Netflix is What If? I have wrestled for years with having made a decision to stay in a mission organization rather than getting my PhD in theology immediately after seminary. That decision hung over me for years. What If? stirred up a discussion with my wife that was really illuminating. Well acted by Hercules, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer and as their daughter Jessie from Jessie on Disney. One other film to add is the powerful abortion movie October Baby. Keep Kleenex close.

Take my recommendations in light of the fact I am a professional theologian (we all are actually, some of us just wasted money and time on a PhD), so I might be looking for something different. But the discussions we have as a family about these films have been great. Grace Unplugged and New Hope were particular powerful with my teenage daughter as we think of purity sexually not simply as a No, but as a yes to wholeness that comes from being made one flesh in marriage (sorry, theologian talking, not a real person).

For years I said I would never watch a Christian film EVER! But I was wrong, there are some great ones on Netflix. There are also a number of LDS films which are very solid on speaking about whole we live in the world. Those films avoid any references to Jesus or the Gospel, and, well, I was impressed. Just leave it at that. Grab your kids, pop the popcorn and enjoy the WoodCarver or Mercy Rule (best with kids of all ages), and Brother White, or the adults and teens in your life and watch Grace Unplugged, What If?, New Hope or This is Our Time (Kleenex warning), or the excellent God’s Not Dead (which includes the love interest from Disney’s Good Luck Charlie). And if it just you and your wife or adult friends and watch October Baby or Unconditional or Marriage Retreat. I am leaving out some others but follow the films at the bottom that are “similar films” and check them out. You can look-up the production companies if you are concerned about the direction of the film and see what you think of their mission.

Sorry for the long post, I just think some of these films are really powerful and the more they are watched on Netflix the more likely other films will be added. Enjoy!

Dr. Christopher, your comment made my day. Truly. People rarely take the time to comment on blogs anymore. But you’ve not only commented but left great insights and recommendations. Thank you. Yes, I’ve featured a few of the other films you’ve mentioned. I am going to add a couple to my Netflix queue that you’ve brought to my attention. I need to update my post with these recommendations! Thank you and have a great weekend!

Its a sign of how individualized life has gotten in the West. We consume and then, eh… If I enjoy something I read or think I can either point some one to a good product (or avoid a bad one) than as part of the Family of God (and, well, just a human being even), you have to do that. Rather than building community (really, Facebook, community? right), it seems to have only made us more and more isolated. Sharing comments on good stories or questions is my small act of rebellion for the need for one another – as intended.

Also, I will be honest, people need to know people are reading and being impacted by your work.
I used to run my own blog, and I just gave up because I couldn’t tell anyone was reading. As soon as I stopped everyone was upset because I had stopped. I had no idea anyone cared. We all want to know what we are putting time into has value to someone…somewhere. I have been working on Bible studies and discussion guides for My Little Pony FIM (yes, I confess, I watched it with my kids and got hooked). So far I am the only one seeing them because I don’t know if anyone would benefit or care. So I will use them and if I see a mom at school or whatever (I am the stay-at-home in our family – doing Theology and Research is a “anywhere/anytime” work and I love kids, even substitute teach now), I share a sample of my study guides. But if post them on a website, people will download….but not ever communicate anything as to their value or if they ever even use them. So…they stay on my thumbdrive.

I like your site BTW (stay at home dad, so you know why I am reading it).

        So happy to do it.

Bible studies for kids, based on popular cartoons is a great idea! They’d do well online. You need to start another blog. I get a lot of traffic from Pinterest. You could easily pin those on Pinterest and get a good amount of traffic I am sure.

You are welcome back here anytime. I love to see readers interact!

Why’re they taking so many Christian movies off of Netflix? Grace Unplugged, God’s Not Dead, Courageous, and Fireproof are all movies that were on Netflix, but have been removed.

Oh no! I am sorry, Sam. I’ll update this post soon with new titles. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. We’ll all have to let Netflix know that we want them back.

    Hi All,
Just thought I’d suggest for those outside the U.S. wanting to watch American Netflix all you need is a VPN (virtual private network). I use Hot Spot SHield. It costs $30/year U.S. It hides my I.P. address so it looks like I’m from the U.S. (I’m in Canada). Then I can watch U.S. Netflix no problem. Same for BBC. With Hot Spot I can choose what country I want to “appear” to be surfing from. So I can watch BBC dramas when the Brits are seeing them, instead of having to wait months till they come to N.A.
I know there are other VPN’s on the market. We’ve been quite happy with Hot Spot Shield overall.
    Blessings, Ted
