Heart Disease Prevention

heart disease prevention

My husband has heart disease in his family. I will admit that he is the healthy one in our marriage. Because of his family history of heart disease, he watches what he eats, exercises, and eats steel cut oatmeal every morning. But did you know that more women die of heart disease than men? It is true. So eating a heart healthy diet and exercise is important for me in heart disease prevention as well.

American Heart Month

February is Heart Health Month and during this special time, Quaker is teaming up with chef Fabio Viviani to energize and inspire women to take action for their hearts.

In support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Movement, Quaker is inviting women to start their day off right with a heart healthy breakfast. With help from Chef Fabio, you can start your day off with a healthy breakfast!

4 Heart Disease Prevention Tips*

  1. Exercise 30 to 60 minutes a day on most days of the week.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight.
  3. Quit or don’t start smoking.
  4. Eat a diet that’s low in saturated fat, cholesterol and salt.

It’s so great that you are raising awareness of heart health and heart disease prevention. Heart disease is a serious problem for women, and it also runs in my family. My grandmother is only 66 years old and is on a dozen different medications because of her heart issues, and I have already been diagnosed with a heart issue of my own and I am only in my mid-20s. It’s scary, and hopefully a lot more women will make good, heart healthy choices in their everyday lives before they are told by a doctor that they don’t have a choice but to pay special attention to their bodies.

Thank you Holly for visiting and leaving a personal comment about your own experience with heart disease. Healthy eating and exercise is important at any age and women need to learn that this is an issue. We must support and educate each other!

We have a history of heart disease in our family so I try my best to make healthy eating choices and get the recommended amount of exercise. I’ve read that oatmeal is excellent for lowering cholesterol and I love how warm and filling it is, too!

I am learning to like oatmeal. My husband makes it every day and occasionally I eat it with him. I don’t dislike it, I just need to eat more than a cup of yogurt and piece of toast. New habits for healthy living!

Great post! I don’t have my full medical history (due to being adopted) so I try to be smart about things like this. Oatmeal and steel cut oats are some of my favorite breakfast foods. I need to work on #2, but do continually work on the rest of the list.

Yes, my husband eats steel cut oats every day! I do like them better actually. I added bananas and powdered creamer to mine to make a homemade fruit and cream variety. It was okay 🙂

Heart health is such an important topic! Those are great tips! We love Quaker old fashioned oatmeal. I use it quite often and for more than just morning oatmeal.

[…] We are now settled nicely in Northern California a five minute walk from the beach. A down hill walk which is easy, the uphill walk takes about 10 minutes and gets my heart rate going. That is good for this woman’s heart! {Remember, women need exercise!} […]
