Summer fishing season here in Western Washington always reminds me of salmon fishing. I grew up in a family of commercial fisherman here on our reservation. We eat salmon at least weekly if not more, and I have great memories of not only being on the boat and beach fishing but also with a rod in hand during our annual town Smelt Derby.

My kids have loved going out fishing with their Papa. Though he is on a gill netting fishing boat, he still had a fishing pole for them to use. Each summer was we visited the Welk Resort for family reunion the kids were able to fish using their uncle’s rods. They love it. I was thankful that this month our family was blessed with our own fishing rods.
We’ve been enjoying amazing weather here in Western Washington and this past month we’ve had a great Sockeye Salmon season. In August, it looks like there will be a large Pink Salmon run – the whole family is excited for the chance to catch their own fish with our new Shakespeare fishing combos.

We took our new Shakespeare fishing rods to Lone Tree at our local Thousand Trails. Thousand Trails leases this land from our tribe so tribal members can access the Lone Tree site at any time for fishing. We love visiting Lone Tree for recreation and fishing both.
Though we didn’t catch anything that day it was fun to get our new rods ready and also to get the feel of how to use the new great combos. It was easy to set them up with bait and hooks – and we love easy. We stayed at the beach for a couple hours and just had a lot of fun.
About Shakespeare
Shakespeare is a well known company that provides easy to use fishing and tackle products. With the Shakespeare Catch More Fish Combo, anglers have everything they need to enjoy fishing. In addition to a Shakespeare rod and reel, the combo comes pre-spooled with Stren fishing line. I don’t know about you but this fishing combo is very appreciated in our home! There are a variety of combos for adults and children as well as for expertise. I love how easy Shakespeare has made this for families to enjoy fishing together.
Fishing truly is a such a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. Just being together at the beach or on the boat is fun for the whole family. We love bringing snacks and just have a good time. Fishing truly is a multigenerational fun! My kids love doing this more than being home with video games or streaming their favorite shows. I love it because we are making lifetime memories.

It looks like it was such a beautiful day!! I hope you catch more fish next time!!
LaVonne says
Thanks, Alison! The fun is the memories and not the amount – thankfully we have a family of commercial fishermen and we get to eat salmon often.

I grew up knowing how to fish too. I love the memories with my dad. I’m trying to pass it on to my kids too. My older kids remember going fishing when I lived in North Carolina. My daughter lost a pole in the sound.
So my youngest started talking about fishing out of the blue on day. His older brother might have sparked the conversation.
They got me to take them fishing last Sunday. It triggered a ton of memories. 🙂

That’s great! I am so glad your building those memories with the kids. They won’t forget it either. That’s really what it’s about – making memories and bonding as a family.

You would think that the rod and reel are the most important things, but they appear at the bottom of the list. This actually makes a lot of sense. I can agree with the fishing license being #1. Not because it is the “law”, but because the purchase of license allows rangers to track the number of anglers (how many people are using a resource/participating) and because fees go to managing (sustainably!) fish and wildlife resources. Although everything on that list is important, I think I’d add in first aid kit somewhere too.
LaVonne says
Yes to both points, Tracee! Managing the fish and wildlife is so important and a first aid kit is something that should be brought – especially when you have kids.
