Your boss finally saw your potential and offered you that promotion…The only problem is, you’ll have to relocate to Fairfax, Virginia and you have to move within the next 2 weeks to begin the transition phase with your new staff. As you stare at all the stuff in your home, you begin to wonder how in the world you’re going to successfully move you, your children, and all of your belongings in 14 days without wanting to ball up in a corner and cry.
Crucial to keeping a level head, 3 (More) Things to Keep in Mind about Moving suggests you must be organized, acquire support, and maintain a good sense of humor. So your best bet is to make a plan, make it fast, and get ready to accomplish your dreams.
The key to making a rush move is:
- Minimizing your day to day responsibilities
- Recruiting as much help as you can get
- Entertaining yourself along the way
Minimizing Your Day to Day Responsibilities
As a mother and career woman, you likely wear a LOT of hats. For the next two weeks, those hats are going to have to be worn by someone else you can trust. I know, it can be difficult to let go of control and routine, but if you’re going to make this happen, you’re going to have to know what you can and cannot handle.
Finding a sitter is the first and best option, particularly for those with smaller children. Ask family members who would be willing to keep an eye out on the kids for you while you pack. Whether it’s for a few hours or the kids stay at a relative’s house for a week or so, you need as much help as you can get…. After all, it does take a village right?
As for work responsibilities… time to use up some of those days off you’ve accumulated through the years. Let your boss know you will either be taking half days or you will not be in for the next week or so while you prepare.
Recruit As Much Help as Possible
Even with the kids taken care of by a friend or family member, you’re going to need a great deal of help getting all of your things sorted, packed, and labeled. Ask anyone you can think of to help you out with the move. Keep in mind that adding a bonus of some sort could be beneficial. For instance, you can tell your neighbors that they can have first dibs on any items you are not taking with you.
Schedule a pickup with your local Salvation Army or second hand store.
When the kids are home, make a game out of packing and give $5 to the kid that packs their room the fastest.
Whatever you have to do to get things packed and out of your house… you should probably do it….
Quick Tip: There are moving companies in Fairfax, VA that will also assist you in packing your belongings if you can’t find enough help within your inner circle. Whatever tips or tricks you can get from your VA Movers is also a great idea. Remember, they’re experts.
Music and Healthy Snacks
There is no better way to get a move on things than to entertain yourself. Turn on your favorite tune and be sure that you’ve stocked upon energy boosting snacks …. Be sure to take a 15 minute break so that you don’t pass out from overworking yourself (besides, you’re going to be doing a lot of that at your new job).
Realistically, you’re going to stress out along the way, but if you follow this process, you are sure to find it much easier to transition and get ready to make a great first impression at your new place of business.

This is great advice for any move! I just completed one recently myself (though with plenty of advance warning, not that it helped) and I wish I’d been a little less shy in asking for help.
Music definitely helped with the motivation though!
This is a great post all around. 🙂 Solid advice even for folks not in that exact situation.

These are all good tips. I often think of moving to a new location, but the actual moving part has been too much of a disincentive – this has me thinking it doesn’t have to be that bad!!! thx!
