We started 1st grade homeschool this week. For an art project we decided to make our own Boxtroll and enter the #BuildaBoxtrollSweeps. I mentioned before that we like to make simple toilet paper crafts. It is a great way to use garbage to make something fun (very Boxtroll of us, I think). We decided to raid the craft drawers and found some heart shaped stickers, construction paper and popsicle sticks.
Boxtrolls take the identity of the box they are made out of. {Eggs is called Eggs because his box has a picture of an egg carton on it.} Boxtrolls are builders and tinkers. They take junk and repurpose it to make new usable objects. Boxtrolls might not be “pretty” but they are magical in their own way and their creativity is certainly not to be ignored!
We decided to cut our toilet paper roll in half to make it look more like a square box shape. We decided to use the heart stickers and make two Boxtrolls. My Princess made one for her and her brother. Since we used hearts, we decided to name them Heart #1 and Heart #2.
We added popsicle sticks for legs and arms. We attached them with heavy duty scotch tape but we may need to use something stronger to bond them.
We found an actual printed photograph (do you still print photos?) and cut out the faces of my Princess and Little Man. I helped my Princess cut out a heart shape for her Boxtroll (Heart #1) but she wanted to cut out the heart shape for her little brothers Boxtroll (Heart #2).
We actually had a lot of fun making the Boxtrolls and it only took about 30 minutes for her to round up the materials, prep and attach.

About The Boxtrolls
From the creators of Coraline and Paranorman, The Boxtrolls introduces movie audiences to a new breed of family – a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain comes up with a plot to get rid of The Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with the fabulously feisty Winnifred. Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.

Here is the official trailer of The Boxtrolls movie –>
We love family friendly entertainment and this movie looks so fun! Don’t forget to check out my previous post: 7 Messages I Love in The Boxtrolls Movie.
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post for SocialMoms and The Boxtrolls.
I like how you incorporated her picture in the craft. I need to start keeping empty toilet paper rolls so we can do this.
Just Google toilet paper roll crafts. There are so many fun things to make. We love using “garbage” to create crafts. Cheap easy and fun.
These are so cute! I wish I had a little kid again to do some of these fun crafts.
This sounds like a cute movie. I think my son would love it, he loves building things. We need to sit down and make our own Boxtrolls!
Yes, Kecia and then enter to win a trip to LA for four for the premiere of the movie! You have until 9/5. Get busy! 🙂
That looks like it’s going to be an amazing movie! I love the stop motion styling! I haven’t made boxtrolls with my own kids yet, but I know they would love to enter the contest.
My daughter keeps asking to watch the trailer again and again. She thinks it looks great. I do too!
Even though my kids are older, they’re looking forward to this movie. I love how the movie is inspiring kids (and their parents) to do fun stuff like crafts, though having the contest to give a little nudge is terrific, too!
I like fun contests like this too. It is fun to get my daughter involved and it gives us something fun to do for homeschool art.
What a cute craft idea! Those would be really to “dress up” and play with!
This is such a cute craft. My boys are excited for this movie, and I think they would love to make one of these too.
I’m having the best time looking at everyone’s boxtroll creations. This is so cute!
It is fun to see the other creations, Liz. We had a great time. An easy way to craft with a six year old girl!
That is such a cute craft idea and my 7year old would love to make a boxtroll…. That movie looks like one that we would really enjoy!.
Thanks Valerie. We had a great time doing it. She did most of it. I like to keep crafting simple for her. I mean, she’s only six. I could have made something more difficult but then she’d be just watching me. And yes, The Boxtrolls looks unique and cute. She wants to see it!
Love your craft! That is soooo cute!
Thanks, Lisa!
Oh that is such a cute craft! My kids want to see this movie and I know my daughter would have fun making one of her own Boxtrolls.
Those are absolutely adorable! I cannot wait to see the boxtroll movie!
How cute! My girls cant wait to see that movie. Even Mike wants to go see it – and he normally tries to sit out the kid movies LOL
Super cute & simple to make. I need to start saving the TP rolls for the kids and not just the rabbits. They can make so many cute things with them.
Easy affordable crafting with “garbage” – my six year old loves it and so do I!
It really looks like it will be a cute movie. Even I want to see it, Megan!
That looks too cute! Good luck in the sweeps!
