We are homeschooling year round with my Princess. We have just finished Kindergarten and now will take a few weeks off before starting first grade. In this first year of homeschooling, I have realized a few things about my teaching style and my daughter’s learning style. I think that 1st grade is going to go even more smoothly because of what I’ve learned this year.
Here is my combination of four things for homeschool success:
- A challenging curriculum. My daughter is smart and she gets bored when things are too easy.
- Learning with Games. My daughter doesn’t like to just be read to and given worksheets. She wants learning games incorporated into her schooling.
- Patience. Both of us need lots of patience. Even if we need to take a break for a few hours and come back to schooling.
- Flexibility. This is what I love about homeschooling. We can do four days one week, six days the next. It doesn’t matter. Since we are schooling year round there is plenty of time to finish 180 days.
Do you homeschool? Can you add anything that you’ve found successful?
Some things just work better together, don’t they? That’s why Old Spice, the manly men’s grooming brand, is back to inform guys that when they use Old Spice anti-perspirant and deodorant, body wash + 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner together the result is a manly, amazing, irresistible freshness from head to toes. It’s a winning combination!
What do you think are winning combinations?
{Think bowling balls and hand sanitizer or football and wings…}
This hilarious new campaign from Old Spice shares not only winning combinations but has their own mandroid to prove how successful an Old Spice winning combination can be. Check out one of their commercials here:

I home school but find it difficult to get my son interested. He wants to play instead and doesn’t treat our school time seriously.

My daughter did pretty well in Kindergarten. But I also realize that 5 and 6 year olds aren’t going to be able to sit for long periods. Kindergarten one on one was pretty easy and we usually finished it all within 1 to 1 /2 hours. I am not sure how 1st grade will be different. I still have a couple more classes to plan.

I’m a homeschool graduate and it’s so neat to me to see how how many options are available now because of technology – we live in amazing times! It sounds like you’re doing a great job! :))
LaVonne says
Thanks Beeb. I wouldn’t have liked homeschooling when I was younger. But we’ve asked my daughter many times how she feels about going to school all day and she tells us continually she still wants to homeschool. So that’s great. I am not doing too bad…

Sounds like you have a great plan in place. I don’t have kids so I’ve never had to consider homeschooling

I really wish that I had the patience to homeschool my older son. He has ADHD issues and I think he would benefit from one on one attention. We are hoping that we can homeschool our youngest or put him in private school.
LaVonne says
I am leaning towards putting my daughter in school around 4th grade. But it will be a private Christian school here in our county. The one on one teaching has really made my daughter much more advanced in math, reading and writing than the other kids her age in our community. But it does take a lot of hard work… I am being pulled in so many directions.

Learning with games is perfect. And flexibility is a good one too!
