You might be living in a box if you haven’t heard of the family friendly movie The Boxtrolls, releasing in theaters September 26th. From the creators of Coraline and Paranorman, The Boxtrolls introduces movie audiences to a new breed of family – a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain comes up with a plot to get rid of The Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with the fabulously feisty Winnifred. Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.
This sounds cute, right? We love family friendly movies here in our home. And this one is sure to please everyone in our family. As I’ve read more about this movie I am more excited than ever to see it. Cheesebridge is a Victorian-era town that looks down on the Boxtrolls and thinks they are monsters who steal their children and their cheese. But, boy are they wrong!
In fact, here are seven messages, {that I love}, that you can find in the Boxtrolls Movie:
- the significance of community
- the importance of friendliness
- recycling and specifically the value of upcycling
- teamwork
- non-judgmental attitudes
- family is what you make it
- Boxtrolls are always good
I don’t know about you, but it is nice to see family friendly movies that are unique. Don’t get me wrong I love princess style movies and movies with vehicles that can talk – but to see a funny movie with great messages (that I believe in) and unique characters – well, I am excited.
What is a Boxtroll?
Boxtrolls take the identity of the box they are made out of. {Eggs is called Eggs because his box has a picture of an egg carton on it.} Boxtrolls are builders and tinkers. They take junk and repurpose it to make new usable objects. Boxtrolls might not be “pretty” but they are magical in their own way and their creativity is certainly not to be ignored!

Right? But looks can be deceiving. That is what’s at the core of the movie too. Don’t judge based on looks. A great message for kids and adults!
The Boxtrolls looks adorable. I had not heard of them before.
Well then I am glad you came over to the post! Kids need a message like this. It doesn’t matter what we look like we all need love, family, community and non-judgement.
