Passing Down the Importance of Faith and Sobriety

The Keep Good Going Life Lessons

New York Life has started the Keep Good Going campaign. These are little nuggets of wisdom and insight that are passed down in the family. Passing these things on, in big or small ways, is important for families and can positively shape lives.

The My Grandfather video tells the story of a grandson connecting with his roots through his grandfather’s influence.

In what ways does your family keep the good going?

importance of faith

I grew up in a Christian home on a Native American reservation that valued faith, family, education and living a wholesome life. I am one of the lucky ones. Because of the decisions made later in life by my grandparents, and then my parents, I had an amazing childhood. One rich in love, family, experiences, and culture. Not all my friends on the rez had the life I did. In fact, many did not. I am blessed. I am thankful.

Now that I am a parent, I too want to pass down the importance of faith and healthy living to my own kids. We stil live on the same Native American reservation. My kids still will grow up seeing a different life around them, but I want them to grow up appreciating what has been handed down to me. I want to keep good going with a deep respect for our Native American culture and a proud ability to live a spirtual life and a healthy life.

Are there any traditions, anecdotes, or words that have been passed down in your family?

I think sharing the past is so important for families Life goes by so fast – I try to take time with my grandchildren to tell them how it was life when I was growing up. I think it is very important for them to know how their Nana lived her life. Good and Not so Good

I am thankful that we live a few miles from my parents and grandfather. My kids get to have those memories with their grandparents.
