With our second baby we thought we knew about baby proofing. We weren’t as worried with number 2 like we were when we had our Princess. We covered the outlets but not much else. Of course, that was a mistake!
We we didn’t do, that we should is babyproof the toilet!
10 Places to Babyproof Your Home:
- Outlets – use safety plugs or outlet covers
- Furniture – attach corner or edge guards
- Cupboards – use latches
- Stairs – install safety gates
- Blinds – cut looped cords, use safety tassles
- Curtains – cut off dangling cords
- Windows – use window stops or window guards
- Doors – use door stops or door holders
- Stairs – install safety gates
- Toilet – install a toilet seat lock
Where else do you babyproof?
My Little Man is currently obsessed with the toilet. We found him leaning over the toilet seat, feet off the ground touching dirty toilet water. {His sister has an problem with forgetting to flush!} Thankfully, he didn’t fall in and drown. That is such a scary though. So now? We didn’t install the toilet seat lock, we just keep our doors shut. All the time. It has become a habit in our home. But after writing this post, I think we will go to the store and get a lock.

We did almost all of those (except for the toilets and windows). Silly story: my oldest took all the corner covers off the furniture and started chewing on our coffee table!! And my little one once got stuck under the stairs gate, perks of having a big baby butt!
Child proofing is not only about your house, it is about teaching grownups not to leave things at kids’ reach (like beers, cups of glass, etc).

Everything goes in my Little Man’s mouth too. I mean everything. He bites on my parent’s coffee table. I took mine down and put it in the garage… Yes, we have become pros at keeping things just out of his reach. Now if we could only teach our 5 year old to do the same!

Great post! Baby proofing your home with kids around is a must.My niece baby is now walking and she says he gets into everything. I will send her your link so she can start now with baby proofing.

Babies are so busy. Nothing is safe from the fingers or mouth! Thanks for coming by Lisa!

Great suggestions. I would add the fireplace (they make guards to cover the sharp edges of the hearth). Also, if you have pets, the pet food bowl!

We definitely had to baby proof our fireplace. There’s still a soft strip around the corners and a safety latch on the door.

That is the perfect place to babyproof! My parents have a wood stove. We’ll have to pull out the gate that goes around it. A wood burning stove gets very hot!

Sorry, but I am laughing at the perfect timing of this post! I’ve never had a problem with the kids and toilets, until now. My 1 year old BOY loves the toilet! Usually using it to climb up into the sink. But one day, the lid was left open and I found him stuck (feet first thankfully!) in the toilet. AND THEN! last night hubs found him with an empty bubble tube, drinking the water, of which our 6 year old forgot to flush full of everything! I about died. His diaper this morning, was not a pretty sight, but he seems to be fine. (and oddly enough, the 6 year old woke up in the night puking).
LaVonne says
Oh no, Adelina! I’d be super worried too! Glad he is okay. We are currently keeping our bathroom doors shut and toilet seat lids down. My Little Man is just sneaky though. I might have to get something for out toilet yet…

This is wonderful tips. We have to protect our kids from not getting hurt.

Great suggestions!!! With an energetic toddler, I feel like I’m always finding new places to proof each week.

For me to baby proof my home I would have to remove everything and just let him sit on the empty floors… In which he would still find a way! He has figured how to push the kitchen chairs to the counters to get up and get into the cupboards! The things I have baby proofed I haven’t had an issue with since my toddler loves to climb!
LaVonne says
The climbing is getting out of hand here too. Is is funny to watch but one day, I know we are going to have a big accident! Boys are so much different than girls. At least my two. It is great to see him learning and trying new stuff though.
