Frugal Traveling

July 5, 2012 By LaVonne

Spread the love

We are hosting family, my sister in law and her husband and four children, this week in our corner of the country. It is always nice to have family come in the summer. This is their first stop on a summer RV tour. Their dream – bucket list, so to speak – was to buy an RV and travel around the country. They made that dream happen!

We travel in our family eight months out of the year for my husband’s work so though traveling across the country in an RV isn’t on our travel bucket list, we still love visiting cool places in this great country of ours. Though I have been to many, many states, (we counted once, it was a lot) there are still many places I’d love to see in our country. Here are four of those places I’d love to see:

  • Mt. Rushmore
  • Niagra Falls
  • Kauai
  • Boston

6 Ways to Travel Frugally

When traveling, my husband and I love to be frugal. Here are some ways that we travel frugally:

  1. Book hotels on the internet (the rate is usually much cheaper)
  2. Use coupons to visit attractions (often you can find codes online or even on products in the store for admission savings)
  3. Find coupons for restaurants (many restaurants have coupons online or in the Sunday circular for savings)
  4. Pack healthy snacks and drinks (minimize the amount of food you purchase and you can stay more healthy while traveling this way)
  5. We also like to rent Redbox movies while traveling. They can be returned to any Redbox in any other place or state. It makes for cheap entertainment while on the road for our 4 year old.
  6. Look for souvenirs at the local big box store like Target, Walmart or Kmart – they are often cheaper than at attractions.

How do you travel frugally?
There are some great travel codes & deals online as well as hotel coupon codes.
What are some places on your travel bucket list?

Those are really good tips. I am jealous that you get to travel with your hubby, that sounds amazing! We only travel when visiting family or going on vacation. When we are going on vacay somewhere, I look for gift certificates on Restaurant.com — awesome discounts. And if we are staying for a week or more, I usually get an Entertainment Book from our vacation city, too.

I have used Restaurant.com before but didn’t think of the Entertainment book. That is such a great idea, Dede! I will have to remember that.

Great tips! We always book hotels online – so much cheaper and easier. As for my travel bucket list…probably Rome…but that’s not exactly a cheap trip!

Yes, I’d love to go to Rome too. It would take some searching, but I am sure you’d find travel and hotel codes for there too. 🙂

I would love to take a trip! But I’m broke so my frugal travel tip is camping in the backyard 🙂

My husband and I just talked about camping in the backyard, or here in our own town. It would be fun for our daughter, and be quite easy. I think it is a good idea – a staycation 🙂

Great tips! I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to afford a vacation but if I do, I will definitely use some of those tips to keep the price low.

Booking hotels on the internet is an awesome tip, and one we do whenever we are traveling. My fiance travels out of state a few times a year for his job and when we were first looking for a hotel in the area he needed to be in, we went right to online deals and ended up paying a lot less than their regular rates.

I had no idea you could return redbox movies anywhere. Great tip. There’s a ton to do on the cheap in Boston, especially for kids. You should definitely come someday.

We will definitely visit Boston one day. I have read about a lot of great things to do there with kids – so I can’t wait. Thanks for stopping by, Lindsey!

Let me know when you’re coming to Boston – there’s so much fun stuff to do there!

Some day, I’ll visit Italy! This year we’re planning on Vegas, fingers crossed that it all works out.

Great tips! Booking through internet is indeed a best choice to save more money on travel.. Even I do that too! They offer much lesser price for fare.
