As we are getting ready to give birth to baby #2 – a boy – I am excited to get family portraits done this summer. Mainly, I’d love to get portraits with our new baby alone, with his Big Sister, and then with the four of us. (Wow! That sounds strange. To think there will be four of us soon!) Don’t you love the internet? You can find such great family portrait ideas and tips.
Portraits have not been easy for us. My Princess has a short attention span, and a hard time “liking” the photographers. After a good 20 – 30 minutes she really does kind of melt down. So the biggest tip that I have when it comes to family portraits is preparation and planning.
My Three Tips for A Better Family Portrait Session
- Know what you are going to wear and wear it to the portrait session (getting dressed there prolongs the session)
- Look at poses, backgrounds and props online before heading to the studio. (JC Penney makes this so easy, since those are all on their website.)
- Move quickly and help the photographer if necessary.
Portraits are important to our family and extended family. We have family in California and Washington that love getting family portraits and of course we love putting them on our wall too. It is such a great way to capture the memories in an affordable and professional way. Also since we will homeschool our daughter, a portrait is a great way to document her yearly growing.

I’ve never got portraits done. We mean to, then we don’t have money, or we never make the appointment, or we don’t have anything to wear.
I’d much rather if they had clothes for us to wear LOL.
PS – I had trouble wrapping my head around the idea of me being a family of 5 after being 4 for so long, so I know what you mean!

We are pretty bad at getting portraits done too. We have had them done 3 times I think, and my daughter is four, so not as bad as I thought. One of my favorite family photos was when we all wore white shirts and blue jeans. It was casual and I loved it.
Thanks for coming by and commenting! I appreciate it. Happy Week!

We were sooooo good with getting pictures of our oldest son. Then Doug came along, and we kind of forgot!! I am glad you are continuing. Now I feel guilty and we may go get our pictures done soon.

LOL! I would have thought I would have had more portraits done with our first but didn’t. I guess with the new nicer DSLR cameras it is easy to just snap quality photos galore. But there is something to be said about portraits in a professional studio.
Thanks for coming by!

I have to admit, I was always a family picture-aholic! Every 3 months, especially when they were babies! Great article!

We rarely do a family portrait maybe because I am always the one behind the camera. But when we do, I then ask myself why can’t we do it more often. good thing cameras have self-timers ^^)

This is a perfect father and son portrait! I love the emotion of the father, it was perfectly captured… Thank you for sharing the ideas.

I do like this father son portrait too. Since I am having a boy, I might use this idea for our family photo.

We have that same photo of Ben’s feet in Faith’s hands on our wall, we also did a photo with a row of all the kids feet and all of their hands from the oldest child’s hands going to the baby’s hands, all 4 kids hands together. I love the photos of the hands and feet because those change so much and you can really see the age/size differences.

This kind of idea is perfect! It is interesting to have a great picture with the whole family and have it displayed in lounge room..

Ugh!! I was so good about this for a while with my son, but never got family portraits. We have some pics, but not many of those either. Maybe someday soon…

As much as I love to have our family portrait, but we have to save money for the schooling of our daughter. I am now contented with our family photo here in our wall. I made it more larger in size to look like a portrait.
