My Princess has been well past the stage of needing a hair cut. She wanted long hair so badly, that I let it grow. But the thing is, it was not really growing. Instead, with all her swimming, her hair was getting very badly damaged.
We use natural shampoo for her as well as a natural detangler, but she was whining everyday about her hair being brushed. So after a month of swimming in the pool in Iowa {literally almost everyday}, I told her that we were going for a haircut.
I explained, clearly, that when she is 8 {or 18 even} she can have long hair. She can grow it to her heart’s content. But I told her I was tired of hearing her whine and cry each day when it was time to brush her hair. I must have convinced her, or maybe she had a moment of surrender {which is rare – this girl is stubborn!}, because she agreed to a girl’s day out.
The mall, shopping, Subway sandwiches, and a hair cut.
A perfect recipe for a fun girl’s day.
The stylist at the mall was patient and kind. She took her time cutting my Princess’ hair. In the end, it turned out very nice. Very short too. This mommy was pleased.
The Princess’ response to her new short hair?
“My neck feels cold.”
Our next travels will take us about 10 hours across the border into British Columbia, where we will have another pool to swim in. I am going to be doing a better job at taking care of my Princess’ hair.
Here are some great swimming hair care tips:
- Use a Clarifying Shampoo
- Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment (see below for recipe)
- Use a bathing cap
- Keep your hair short
- Deep Conditioning Treatment Natural Recipeย – Mix an entire peeled and mashed avocado with one egg and 1 tbsp. of olive oil. Combine and slather on your hair, wrapping it in a shower cap. Sit somewhere warm for 30 minutes before washing out.
Do you have any swimming hair care tips?
Swimming can really damage the hair. We use bathing caps because she gets a lot of ear infections. It protects her hair too. I like your natural conditionning treatment..
My daughter is four and has had two ear infections. I think I will buy her a bathing cap for this summer. Thanks for stopping by!
Great tips and just in time for swimming season!! Such a cute, “grown up” cut for a princess. ๐
Thanks, Janet. We love it!
I can’t wait to use cute bathing caps on Kenzie ๐ SHe doesn’t really have that much hair yet.
she looks so grown up! WOW! Cute style for sure!
It looks so cute! I don’t think my daughter will ever have long hair – she hates it in her face and fights me on ponytails.
My Princess always takes out her pony tails too. So this hair cut is perfect for her. Washing and brushing it has been so easy the last few days. So glad we cut it!
So cute!! Thanks for the tips!
Is it the chlorine that hurts the hair? I guess I don’t swim that much, but I’m guilty of dying it fairly often. Your daughter’s haircut is too cute by the way:)
I think it is the chlorine. It is such a strong chemical.
Love the style – I am glad you had fun
I think I’ll be using your deep conditioning treatment for myself, though my husband will complain about the waste of an avocado. ๐
Your little girl looks so grown up with that pretty haircut!
I am going to do it too. Soon. My hair is feeling a bit dry and I have not done a deep treatment for years. I like natural things!
I love her haircut! With my little toeheads we use a Paul Mitchell shampoo, that is a mild shampoo, it keeps the green away. There is also a Fairy Tales shampoo that is good at keeping hair healthy when swimming and it’s natural!
I will have to check out Fairy Tales shampoo for sure. Thanks! ๐
Water in swimming pool can really damaged your hair because of the chlorine in it. So after taking a swim, better to take a shower right away to rinse off the chemical unto your hair.
We do shower right away, but after swimming 4x per week for a month, it doesn’t seem to matter. We need swimming shampoo I am sure.
With all the chemicals placed in the pool water, you can really expect it to take its toll on your daughter’s hair.
I agree with the idea of deep cleansing after every session at the pool to rinse out those chemicals.
Thanks for providing useful tips and i will definitely follow this to avoid some problems!
Like this post! and this is really a great tips to follow! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
It’s already summer, and I know kids love to go on swimming. Aside from sun screen lotion for our skin we should give our kids a swimming shampoo. This can help to prevent their hair from damage.
Thanks for this swimming hair care tips, this is perfectly timing this summer vacation…
Awesome tips, like the deep conditioning treatment natural recipe, have to try this out on my hair as well as my kids!
I’m on a swim team so this really helps.
