As we drove over the bridge into Brooklyn, we scanned the distance for the Statue of Liberty. Through the haze we just could not see her.
Then from the back seat my Princess yelled, “I see her! She is green!”
Sure enough, we located her too. Lady Liberty in the far distance to the left. A great start of the day in Brooklyn, New York.
I won’t lie, the 2.5 hour drive was not very fun. Our iPod apps and The Lion King soundtrack did save us for a little while, but road trips with a 3 year old are not always peaceful.
When we arrived, we found a free parking space two blocks from Coney Island. {This saved us $10 for parking!} It was a hot day! It reached 97 degrees, and with the humidity it felt much higher.
We decided to swim in the Atlantic Ocean first, go back to the hotel to nap, and come back out in the evening for rides and food.
We packed a lunch and snacks to save money and we were glad we did. Though the food looked wonderful, it was fried, fattening, and sure to make us sick if we ate it for two meals.
My Princess loved swimming the ocean. We put her floaties on and she was out there past all the other children, swimming and have fun in the waves. She is so brave. {I could only go in waist deep!}
After naptime we returned to the beach for food and rides. Nathan’s, which has been at Coney Island since 1916, was our first stop – old fashioned lemonade and fresh cut French fries. It was a great first purchase.
There are 3 separate amusement parks at Coney Island. We first went to Luna Park. It was the newest park with newer rides. Though it was it bit more expensive, my Princess loved the children’s rides. Her height enabled her to ride 11 of the rides.
After cheese pizza and cotton candy and fried Oreos, (a simple recipe can be found here) we decided to walk along the board walk. A good long walk out to the pier helped aid the digestion of terrible yet good food. {Why is the great food always bad for you?}
The last bit of fun of the night was riding the Wonder Wheel – a very large Ferris wheel with moving cars. At $6 per ticket, I decided to wait at the bottom for the long ride. {Plus, I truly do hate Ferris Wheels!}
A long day of family fun at Coney Island. We are glad we made the 2.5 hour trip here. {The price of tolls though, Oh my goodness!, it cost $38 in tolls round trip!}
