My love affair with potatoes began when I was very young. Living four doors down to my grandparents on our reservation, I spent more time there than at home. They ate potatoes every single day. My grandpa still does, I am sure. When I think about my childhood, and growing up on our reservation, home feels comfortable and smells like boiled or fried potatoes. I still get that great feeling when I smell potatoes cooking.

So when I think about my childhood, my home here on my reservation, and food – I cannot help but think about potatoes.

This time of year, my grandfather buys a huge box of potatoes, which he keeps out on his back porch, to eat for the entire winter. So the fall season really reminds me of potatoes.
