Protect Your Family Nest

August 31, 2011 By LaVonne

Spread the love

There are few things in the life that are truly important. The older I get the more clear that becomes.

Number One: My own relationship with God.

Number Two: My family.

Protecting my family nest is important to me. I want my daughter to live in a family where there is love, protection, and grace shown. I want her to see Jesus clearly by my example and I want her to have a great love for other people.

With this, I think it is important to take care of the things in this life I can control. I cannot control for disasters, death or emergencies. But I can be prepared. Here are things that we are doing in our family to protect our family nest:

1. We have a savings account. We budget our money and we save each month. If my husband were to get hurt and could not work we have money put away. If he lost his job we are prepared for him to be out of work. This is important. Many families in our country truly are just one paycheck away from becoming homeless.

2. We have a 401K and IRA both. We put the full amount each year into my husband’s work and they match it. It is free money. We also both have an IRA which we put money into each year.

3. We have a college fun set up for our daughter. If she wants to become a doctor {which would be lovely} she will have enough money to do that.

4. My husband and both have life insurance. If, God forbid, something happens to either of us, my Princess will be taken care of.

5. We have a living trust. Everything in it is clearly spelled out. If something happens our family does not have to scramble around to figure it out. We have it figured out now.

A few facts:

Did you know that half of Americans say they are under-insured? That’s 58 million* of us. And 70%* of people with kids under 18 say they would be in serious trouble if something happened to the primary breadwinner.

Experts say a good rule of thumb is to insure 5 to 10 times your income. It sounds like a lot, but it’s really not. Think about what you’re really worth.  Life insurance will help cover the cost of your mortgage, medical & funeral expenses, continuing childcare, living expense and college tuition.

How many people would have to be hired to do all the things you do for your family? Salary.com estimates the average stay-at-home mom would earn $117,867 per year if she were paid for all the work she does.

Most people feel overwhelmed when they think about this stuff. Your local Allstate agent can talk you through your situation and help you plan for the future today. Allstate and their agents have been helping customers protect their families for over 50 years.

We have planned ahead. We realized at a young age the importance of protecting our nest. I am glad we did this!
