Word Filled Wednesday: Salt of the World

September 30, 2009 By LaVonne

Spread the love

This week my Princess got into the salt for the first time. She is already 21 months and never been in the salt before! Which actually surprises me since we use salt daily. I have just been good about keeping it in the cupboard. It was left out on the table and while I was washing dishes she quietly climbed on the chair and proceeded to pour the salt into her hand and lick it. When I turned around I saw the licking part. I grabbed a paper towel to wash her hand off and while throwing that away she started sticking her wet finger on the table. Where is was spilled she was making finger trails. She loved the taste of salt! A lot of salt!

Of course this got me thinking of the challenge of Jesus that we are to be the salt of the earth in His wonderful Sermon on the Mount.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” (Matthew 5: 13 NIV)

This devotional gave me some great ideas that expanded on this Bible text. Salt was pretty important in Bible times. We are important for this world. What we do, what we say, how we live, how we love – these are all important. When we feel discouraged we should realize Jesus is telling us we are important and we have a job to do here on this earth.

Another great expansion of this text is the preservative quality that salt has. I like how Pastor Laurie says,

“Now when Jesus says we are to be salt, it means that you and I, as Christians, should seek to be a preservative wherever we are. For example, if you are a parent, you can guide your children in what they watch on TV and in what they read. You can teach them Christian values, and live as an example to them.”

Salt also makes us thirsty. If we really are a “salty” Christian then we will make others thirsty for Jesus. They will watch our life and want to have what we have. I know I want to be a “salty” christian! What an exciting yet humbling proclamation from our Savior, (that is not always easy). Pray for me as I try to be salt in the earth but most importantly in my own home and family.
