Blogging Taxes? I should have started sooner!

blogging taxes

I am working this month on my blogging taxes. It is not fun. Going back through my editorial calendar, email inbox, Amazon account, and Paypal account — whew! Can you say time consuming? I really should have been keeping track all year last year. Or, I should have at least done this quarterly, not all at in January! I highly dislike taxes.

So are you a blogger and need to know some basics?

Here are three great articles you should read. I could regurgitate it here for you, but honestly they all do a great job, I don’t feel that it is necessary. Just head over to all three articles and read.

  • Blogging Basics 101: What Do Bloggers Need to Claim for Taxes
  • ProBlogger: 7 Things Every Blogger Should Know About Tax
  • Amy Lynn Andrews: Blogging Taxes

Remember, if you have any questions your really should talk to a tax professional. Taxes can be confusing and miserable, so get some great help if you need it!

As I am doing my taxes late at night after the kids are in bed, I am supremely thankful for technology. I found an editorial calendar Google doc template that I am using to keep track of everything blog related. And, I will have  you all know that I have been using it for 2015 blog related income and expenses. I am currently up to date. I plan on NOT waiting to do it all at once next year.

I am also glad that I have my own office with an Intel All in One to do all this last minute blogging taxes. At least, I have a great piece of tech that allows me to have a wireless mouse and keyboard to continually work. I have even been using my touch screen more. Plus, the large screen size allows for me to actually see what I am doing these past late nights. Searching, collecting the data, and using websites requires a great computer. I highly recommend an Intel AIO.

How are your taxes coming along?

We are retired and most of our income is non-taxable. I usually just wait until all tax forms are in (or I’m sure they’re not coming, in the case of my 1099s for my winnings for the year) and then I use TurboTax to do a quick return to see if we are going to have to file or not. So, I haven’t actually started yet since I don’t have all of my forms yet

We used to use TurboTax too, Sandy. They made it so easy. Now our taxes are so complicated that we pay someone else to do them. I am going to keep much better track of my income and expenses this year though, that’s for sure!

I am trying to make it a habit this month. I have done well so far. I have made it through the end of August on my blog income. My husband likes to get our tax guy all our paper work the first week of February. Argh!! I am running out of time!

We track in Quicken all year long. Converting to a tax application is a cinch!

I hate doing taxes as well. It is crazy. I am terrible at keeping tack – but did a lot better last year. Hopefully this year will be better than last. Thanks for the tips!

I have been keeping track of everything in an Excel spreadsheet. It sure has helped simplify it for me. Now I don’t have a million pieces of paper lying around that I have to round up. Thanks for the great links to the other articles. Useful info to know.
