What age is good for a first pet?

January 20, 2015 By LaVonne

Spread the love

first pet

Two months ago, on a football Sunday, a cat came over to visit. We hadn’t seen the cat before. We could tell she was a pet and not wild. She wanted to come inside the house so badly. The kids went out and played with her for hours. She was so patient with both of my children. They even brought her some salmon to eat (from our lunch menu) and a dish of water to drink. They were in love. That led my Princess to a question that I’ve heard countless times in her young life.

“When can I get a pet?”

My husband and I have always told her when she is ten years old we would get her a pet. Ten just seems like a good, responsible age. So, I want to ask all of you, when is a good age for a first pet?

Dog or cat?

My kids both would agree, the one thing that makes their favorite shows on Netflix even better, is when there are animals in the show. Besides being loyal and cute, pets and animals in general can deliver important lessons on courage, protection and love.

About The Adventures of Puss in Boots

The world’s greatest feline fighter, lover and milk connoisseur is back in this original series filled with daring adventures, great boots, and laugh-out-loud fun! The entire family will be entranced by Puss’ fantastical CG world filled with new characters, exotic locations and mystical tales that make up the stuff of legends. There’s nothing that can get in this celebrated swashbuckling kitty’s way…except maybe a hairball.

I am thankful for Netflix. Because even though, my kids don’t have a pet yet, they can enjoy animals and pets on some of their favorite shows!

It took us a long time to get a pet growing up. My mom finally broke down and got us a dog. She was a sweetheart and a great dog. We ended up giving her to my grandpa after we moved. He got to enjoy her for several years and loved her greatly.

I have always had pets around in our house from time to time. I mostly had cats. Now we have three dogs.

I think pets are a great addition to the family if you have time for them. My youngest has grown up with the dogs and they love him too.

We will have to watch the Puss in Boots this week on Netflix.

I grew up with two dogs and a cat. I don’t remember not having them so I must have been young when we got them.

I think you know when your child is responsible enough for a pet. Pets are a BIG responsibility and should always be treated as a part of the family; because that’s what they are.!!! So , I think the age varies, just as long as they are up for the life long commitment.

(What age is good for a first pet?) Our grandson has an older cat named Sophie. She has been around way before he was. He is actually pretty good around her too. He doesn’t bother her too much- 🙂
